White Cliffs Members Rescue Coastal Paths

Path ER215 runs on the seaward side of Abbotscliff House east of Capel between Folkestone and Dover offering spectacular views across the Channel.  Because it was in need of maintenance and there was an alternative, though much less attractive, path on the landward side, Kent County Council sought and obtained an order from magistrates to close the path.  Local Ramblers' members contested this action in the County Court in Spring 2002 and saved the path.  The path was cleared the December before by Mike Godfrey and Chris Jones of Capel Ramblers.

Two years later in July 2004 Mike and Chris took on another task rejected as too difficult by others. That was the clearing of the path down the cliff from the Clifftop Cafe at Capel (HF53) which had been closed for some three years due to blockages caused by cliff falls. As well as clearing tons of chalk from the route, some of it nearly 5ft deep, they cleared several fallen trees and installed 57 new steps.
